The study was based on Kano State, the most populous State in Nigeria and the largest city in the Muslim north. It examines the causes and socio- cultural determinants of maternal mortality in both urban and rural communities in Kano State as well as hospital-based deaths. The study also provides the spatial patterns of hospital deliveries,as well as maternal mortality and morbidity in the State. About the author

Dr. Yusuf M Adamu is a Medical Geographer, and Associate Professor of Geography at the Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. He spent nine months at the School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham as a Fulbright fellow. He co-edited Readings in Social Science Research and Introduction to Social Sciences.
