Rhodopsine sind lichtempfindliche Proteine, deren Chromophor als Retinal (Vitamin-A-Aldehyd) fungiert. In den letzten Jahren stellte sich heraus, daß die Rhodopsine zu einer großen Familie von Rezeptoren gehören und daß deren allgemeiner Mechanismus der Signaltransduktion weit verbreitet ist.
