Der demographische Wandel und die Ausdehnung des Konzepts des Lebenslangen Lernens führen in der Erziehungswissenschaft zu einer zunehmenden Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Altenbildung. Ines Himmelsbach betritt mit ihrer empirischen Studie ein neues Feld, indem sie Lernen im Alter unter der Bedingung eingeschrankter Handlungsfahigkeit sowohl aus der Angebotsperspektive als auch aus der Sicht der Betroffenen untersucht. Sie arbeitet Formen des Umgangs mit der altersbedingten Makuladegeneration, d.h. dem pathologisch altersbedingten Sehverlust, heraus. Die Autorin analysiert, inwiefern dabei padagogische Formen zum Einsatz kommen und wie sich Defizit- und Kompetenzerfahrungen in diesem Kontext bearbeiten lassen. Ziel ist es, durch empirische und theoretische Analysen Grundlinien für eine Weiterentwicklung einer erziehungswissenschaftlichen, gerontologisch informierten Altenbildung zu legen.
