Challenging traditional narrow views, this unique work proposes to rethink and reinterpret Ulster loyalism from the beginning of the "Troubles" to the present day, by tracing its religious, paramilitary, political, and community influences.The work examines the core values of loyalist communities, the roots of violence, and the shift toward peaceful coexistence with former enemies. James W. McAuley is Professor of Political Sociology and Irish Studies and Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise at the University of Huddersfield, UK. He has written extensively on various aspects of Northern Irish politics and society and has produced a number of books and articles dealing with unionism and loyalism. A regular media commentator on Northern Irish Affairs, he is a recognized expert on Ulster unionism and loyalism.
