She received her PhD in history from Harvard University in 1984. An associate professor of history at Oregon State University, her current research and teaching interests include the history of popular music, social work and psychotherapy, and photography. She is the author of Settlement Folk: Social Thought and the American Settlement Movement, 1885-1930 (University of Chicago Press) and, with Tisa Lewis and Susan M. Shaw, Girls Rock! Fifty Years of Women Making Music (The University Press of Kentucky).
