He has served as Director of the Latin American Studies Program at Cornell University, where he taught from 1974 to 2000, as President of the Latin American Studies Association (2000-2001), and as Executive Secretary of the Conference on Latin American History (2003-2007). He is also the author of Policing Rio de Janeiro (1993), and is the general editor of A Companion to Latin American History (2008). Klappentext When slavery was abolished in 1888, Sao Paulo, Brazil, subsidized the immigration of workers from southern Europe and Japan. Faced with a worldwide coffee market and abundant land for expansion, native planters developed a package of incentives to attract workers, in contrast to the coercive labor systems historically common in other plantation systems.
