Bae, Bien-U (geb.1950 in Yosu, Südkorea) wurde durch meditative Landschaftsaufnahmen mit einer geradezu kalligrafischen Qualität bekannt. Seine neue Serie entstand während der letzten 20 Jahre und zeigt Landschaften in Bewegung. Bäume und Gräser biegen sich im Wind, steile Klippen und vom Wasser geformte Felsen und Steine liegen umhüllt von Gischt und Nebel in der Meeresbrandung, die Horizontlinien verschwinden im Weißgrau des Himmels. Der koreanische wie auch der in China und Japan gebräuchliche Begriff für Landschaft setzt sich aus den Wörtern "Wind" und "Szenerie" zusammen. Er ist eng verbunden mit den traditionellen, kosmologischen Vorstellungen von einer alle lebenden Dinge durchziehenden Quintessenz, dem Äther. Die poetische Wortschöpfung Windscape ist eine wörtliche Übersetzung jenes Begriffs, der in ganz Ostasien mit denselben Bedeutungsebenen assoziiert wird.

Dr. Jeong-hee Lee-Kalisch, Lehrbeauftragte an der Freien Universität Berlin, stammt aus einer angesehenen Literatenfamilie. Sie war federführend bei den bedeutenden Ausstellungen "Das Alte China (1994)" und "Korea - Die Alten Königreiche (1999)".
Summary
Bae, Bien-U (*1950 in Yosu, South Korea) gained recognition for his meditative landscape photographs, which possess an almost calligraphic quality. His new series, created over the course of the past twenty years, features landscapes in motion. Trees and grass lean in the wind; steep crags, cliffs, and rocks and stones shaped by water lie enveloped in sea spray and fog in the surf; the lines of the horizon disappear in the white-gray of the sky. As is also the case in Chinese and Japanese, the Korean word commonly used to denote landscape is a compound of the words “wind” and “scenery.” It is closely bound to the traditional cosmological notion of a quintessence that permeates all living things: the ether. The poetic neologism, “windscape,” is a literal translation of this term, which is associated with the same levels of meaning throughout East Asia.
