This is the first volume to treat exclusively an ubiquitous feature of ocean circulation - the poleward currents and undercurrents that occur along eastern boundaries of all major ocean basins. By comparing coastal current data from different regions the authors show that poleward transport along eastern boundaries is an important part of the basinwide budgets of heat, salt, and freshwater. In essence, the book documents that the success of upcoming global ocean circulation experiments must account for these poleword transports. Specifically, by defining of global-scale kinematic and dynamic characteristics of these flows, the book supplies the parameters for the design of field experiments in eastern ocean sectors.
