Public choice is the study of behavior at the intersection of economics and political science. Since the pioneering work of Duncan Black in the 1940s, public choice has developed a rich literature, drawing from such related perspectives as history, philosophy, law, and sociology, to analyze political decision making (by citizen-voters, elected officials, bureaucratic administrators, lobbyists, and other "rational" actors) in social and economic context, with an emphasis on identifying differences between individual goals and collective outcomes. About the author
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Friedrich Schneider studierte Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Universität Konstanz und habilitierte an der Universität Zürich. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten an den Universitäten Yale, Princeton und Virginia und Gastprofessuren in Stockholm, an der Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh und Aarhus ist er seit 1986 Professor am Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz; von Oktober 1996 bis September 2007 war er Vizerektor für Außenbeziehungen der Johannes Kepler Universität. Der gebürtige Deutsche lehrte bereits an Universitäten in Europa, Amerika und Australien. In der Forschung befasst er sich mit der Ökonomischen Theorie der Politik, der Finanzwissenschaft sowie der Wirtschafts-, Umwelt- und Agrarpolitik. Im Vordergrund stehen hierbei die Analyse staatlicher Aktivitäten und deren Konsequenzen für das wirtschaftliche Geschehen. Er ist Verfasser von zahlreichen Büchern und Publikationen in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften und Sammelbänden. Von 2005 bis 2008 war er Vorsitzender des Vereins für Socialpolitik, der Vereinigung von Wirtschaftswissenschaftlerinnen und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern des deutschen Sprachraums.
