The contributors to this volume are all distinguished alumni of the University of Science and Technology of Beijing (USTC) who are currently based in the United States. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of UTSC, they have put together a volume on chemical and engineering aspects of nanoscale functional materials. Part I focuses on the synthesis and manipulation of varied nanostructured materials, for the purpose of eventual rational design of functional nanomaterials with specific functionalities. Part II covers the unique electron transfer/transport properties of nanostructured materials and their implication in nanoelectronics and molecular electronics. Part III reviews recent progress in the applications of functional nanomaterials in energy science and engineering (solar cells and fuel cells). Part IV surveys the applications of nanomaterials in biological labeling, biomedical imaging, and sensing and detection in biomolecules. This volume on chemical and engineering aspects of nanoscale functional materials was published as part of the festivities for the 50th Anniversary of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). All contributors escept one are USTC alumni holding faculty positions in the US. All are significant players in the field.
In this book, the topics range from rational design and synthesis of functional materials, to deliberate manipulation of their opto-electronic properties, and to their diverse application in nanoelectronics, energy science and biodetection. The subject is of current interest to a wide range of readers in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering and electrical engineering. The list of contributors includes prominent leaders, as well as rising stars who are making impressive starts and gaining national and international recognition as assistant professors. The book is intended to be a technical reference for researchers working in these areas, and may be useful for graduate and post-doctoral students and focusing on nanomaterials and applications. This volume is a unique combination of these different research areas, and a valuable resource to those in the field.
