Description

Toxoplasma gondii is an important parasite causing economic losses in agriculture, congenital abnormalities in man and fatal disease in immunosuppressed individuals. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in the parasite. This is partially due to the increased clinical importance of toxoplasmosis: the disease kills 25 % of AIDS patients. However, hit is also because the parasite provides a tractable model system for molecular, cellular and immunological investigation of intracellular parasites. The book is divided into four sections: three basic science sections on molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology of toxoplasmosis, with a final section reviewing applied issues such as vaccination, chemotherapy, and diagnosis.
