The science of history has changed considerably in the last few decades, and the writings of Jürgen Kocka from the past 40 years reflect these changes, from the controversial rise of social history in the 1960s to the influence of constructivist cultural history in the 1980s and the modern interest in transnationality and global history. They also document what has remained constant throughout Jürgen Kocka's work despite the many changes: his particular interest in social history, in analytical reflection and in history as a discipline that presents critical argumentation and orientations for public discussion.

About the author

Jürgen Kocka, geboren 1941, studierte Geschichte, Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie und Philosophie in Marburg, Wien, Berlin und Chapel Hill (North Carolina). Er promovierte 1968 bei Gerhard A. Ritter; Wissenschaftlicher Assistent in Münster und ADLS-Fellow in Harvard bis 1972; nach der Habilitation Professur an der Universität Bielefeld 1973 - 1988; als Gastprofessor bzw. Fellow u.a. in Princeton, Jerusalem, Stanford und Paris. Seit 1988 Professor für die Geschichte der industriellen Welt an der FU Berlin sowie seit 1991 ständiges Mitglied des Wissenschaftskollegs zu Berlin. Zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, u.a. Leibniz-Preis 1992. Präsident des "Comite des Sciences historiques".
