He left his family behind to move to America in order to pursue his desire to learn new things and experience new things, which he was unable to accomplish in the Catholic-dominated Ireland. Murphy visited India and spent a lot of time studying Hinduism with Indian sages. Later, he established a new Hindu-inspired church in America. Over 30 books were authored by Murphy.
