This is a story of love and war set in 1917.
Thomas Winson, a young infantry officer, en route to France, suddenly finds himself romantically involved with two women.
One is an old friend and colleague, the other a married ex-actress who is off to work in military hospitals in northern France.
Later, between his terrifying experiences on the Western Front, Thomas finds his fate inextricably linked with both women.
Their love story, and the moral dilemmas which the three of them have to confront, is played out against a backdrop of trench warfare, the vital role of women in that conflict and the post traumatic stress syndrome then referred to as 'shell shock'.
