Klappentext 'The Fateful Journey' biedt een nieuwe blik op de Nederlandse reizigster Alexine Tinne, die als Haagse freule met haar moeder Henriëtte Tinne-Van Capellen door Egypte en Soedan reisde. Op de tocht van Alexine Tinne en haar moeder naar de Gazelle-rivier (1862-1864) kregen ze gezelschap van de Duitse zoöloog Theodor von Heuglin. Na een vierjarig onderzoek van alle Tinne-documenten, waaronder nog onbekende brieven, foto's en ander archiefmateriaal, ligt er nu een volledig verslag van deze expeditie in Soedan waarvan de drama's nog lang zouden na-echoën. Haar rijkdom, wilskracht en doorzettingsvermogen zogen Alexine Tinne mee in een overweldigend 'avontuur' dat uiteindelijk haar dood zou betekenen.
