Gegenstand dieser Studie ist die Entstehung der antiken Kulturen Europas und ihrer Literalität vor der Verbreitung alphabetischer Schrift:
In acht Kapiteln erfolgt eine eingehende Untersuchung der verschiedenen kulturellen Muster einschließlich der jeweiligen Schriftkultur, also des Alten Europas, der Kykladen, des minoischen Kretas und des antiken Italiens. Der Zeitraum des Wettstreits zwischen ägäischen und alphabetischen Schreibsystemen, den das letztere zu seinen Gunsten entschied, erfährt dabei besondere Behandlung.

About the author
Dr. phil. habil. Harald Haarmann, geb. 1946, studierte Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft und verschiedene philologische Einzeldisziplinen an den Universitäten Hamburg, Bonn, Coimbra (Portugal) und Bangor (Wales). Er lehrte und forschte an verschiedenen deutschen und japanischen Universitäten. Er ist Mitglied im Forscherteam des Research Centre on Multilingualism (Brüssel). Für seine Arbeit erhielt er diverse Preise: Prix logos (1999) der Association européenne des linguistes et des professeurs de langues (Paris) und den Premio Jean Monnet (1999) im Bereich Essayliteratur. Harald Haarmann lebt und arbeitet in Finnland.
