Lettres à Nora

Nora Barnacle, que Joyce rencontra en 1904 et qui deviendrait son épouse en 1931, joua un rôle essentiel dans la création des grandes figures féminines de l'oeuvre joycienne. On la retrouve ainsi derrière Gretta Conroy (« Les Morts », Dublinois), Bertha (Les Exilés), Molly Bloom (Ulysse), et Anna Livia Plurabelle (Finnegans Wake). Ces figures renvoient toutes en écho au mystère de la féminité, dont Nora représentait pour Joyce le modèle vivant à travers ses infinis avatars.
Les lettres à Nora se concentrent sur deux grandes périodes. Il y a d'abord 1904. L'année de leur rencontre, qui prit pour Joyce une telle importance que la grande journée d'Ulysse, le 16 juin 1904, correspondrait à l'un de leurs premiers rendez-vous. C'est une chronique émouvante de la naissance d'une passion amoureuse, avec ses envolées romantiques, ses moments de doute et ses morsures de jalousie. L'autre moment fort va d'août à décembre 1909. Joyce est à Dublin et Nora est restée à Trieste, et cette séparation va donner naissance à une série de lettres qui, par leur franchise sexuelle et parfois leur obscénité, sont un extraordinaire document sur les relations de couple, sujet qui obsédait les auteurs de la fin de l'époque victorienne et du début de la période moderniste, de Thomas Hardy à D.H. Lawrence.
