Julio Villani's work owes as much to the gleaner as to the angels, to chance finds as to poetry. It would be unwise to try and label it. At most, we can pinpoint some of its merry kith and kin. Duchamp and the Oulipo, Calder and Torres-Garcia, the Brazilian modernist Anthropophagic movement, walking hand in hand with the dada magazine Cannibale.
Villani draws on humour as a way to make sense of the world - and the surprising unfolding of forms on his works emanates from this playful mood, constantly regenerated.
Nothing stops the wordy verve and imaginative vein of the artist, set on pursuing ironic though tender dislocations. He juggles with ideas as well as materials, Art History references or objects with spontaneity, no strings attached other than those holding his joyous assemblages.
