Abandonné en pleine guerre civile, Michel del Castillo est recueilli à 17 ans par une famille franquiste. Quarante ans plus tard, devenu écrivain en France, il revient sur les lieux de son enfance à l'occasion de la traduction d'un de ses romans.
Il comprend alors que le personnage principal de son livre, fasciste et phalangiste, n'est autre que le fantôme d'Antón, son père adoptif...
