Fantasio, «bourgeois de Munich» vaguement
bohème, est menacé de la prison pour dettes.
Dans le même temps la princesse Elsbeth, fille du
roi de Bavière, est fiancée au prince de Mantoue,
un imbécile couronné. Pour échapper à ses
créanciers et aussi par désoeuvrement, Fantasio,
sur un coup de tête, décide de prendre la place
du bouffon du roi qui vient de mourir.
Plutôt qu'une comédie, Fantasio est une féerie,
irréelle de légèreté et d'élégance, où se
conjuguent les influences d'Hoffmann et de
Shakespeare, de Marivaux et des Mille et Une
Nuits. C'est en même temps une réflexion
exemplaire sur le théâtre, qui renvoie dos à dos
la tragédie classique, inadaptée aux temps
bourgeois, et le drame romantique, déclamatoire
et boursouflé, pour suggérer une troisième voie,
celle d'un théâtre magique, ironique et tendre, à
la croisée de la comédie de caractères et du
conte merveilleux.
