Jean-Claude Romand est un homme normal. Bon père et bon époux, il a des amis et un travail intéressant. Aux yeux de chacun, il mène une vie exemplaire. Ses photos de famille ressemblent aux vôtres: on y voit le reflet d'un monde heureux. Le 9 janvier 1993, il arme sa carabine et tue de sang-froid sa femme, ses deux enfants et ses parents. On découvre alors un imposteur qui s'est inventé une vie trompeuse. Et derrière l'imposteur, un monstre froid. À partir de ce fait divers inouï, Emmanuel Carrère retrace une existence lacunaire, cherche ce qui reste d'humanité chez Jean-Claude Romand. Plus qu'un roman, plus qu'une enquête: une énigme métaphysique.

L'accompagnement critique s'interroge sur le genre de L'Adversaire, qui est aux marges du roman et de la biographie. Une longue interview d'Emmanuel Carrère retrace l'élaboration de l'oeuvre.
