Zusatztext I enthusiastically recommend Granular Patterns to graduate students and researchers working on pattern formation or with granular media. The book is very useful, and having it at hand will foster appreciation of granular patterns and help researchers push the boundaries of that truly rich and fascinating subject. Igor Aranson graduated from the Gorky State University, Russia, in 1982, and obtained a Ph.D in Physics and Mathematics in 1987. Igor Aranson worked in various areas, from pattern formation, reaction-diffusion systems, to superconductivity, granular materials, and biophysics. He published more than 120 research papers and several book chapters. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.Dr Lev TsimringResearch Scientist at the Institute for Nonlinear Science, University of California, San DiegoResearch Scientist at the Institute for Nonlinear Science, University of California, San Diego Lev Tsimring received his Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics from the Moscow Institute of Oceanology in 1985. Until 1991 his work was focused on fluid dynamics and the theory of internal and surface waves in the ocean. Since then he has been working in several fields of nonlinear dynamics, including pattern formation, chaos theory, nonlinear time series analysis, and biophysics. He has published more than 120 research papers and edited a book on applications of nonlinear dynamics in communications. He also holds several patents. Since 1992 L.S. Tsimring resides in San Diego, USA. Klappentext This book presents a comprehensive review of experiments and novel theoretical concepts needed to understand the mechanisms of pattern formation in granular materials. An effort is made to connect concepts and ideas developed in granular physics with new emergent fields, especially in biology, such as cytoskeleton dynamics.
