Le malentendu

Rêvant de faire fortune et d'aller vivre au soleil, Martha et sa mère assassinent pour les dépouiller les clients de leur auberge. Le frère de Martha, parti depuis vingt ans et revenu incognito, sera leur dernière victime : quand elles découvrent qui elles ont tué, les deux femmes se suicident. D'un malentendu, Camus a fait le sujet d'une «tragédie moderne». Le malheur y vient moins de l'aveuglement, propre aux tragiques grecs, que d'une éperdue volonté de bonheur soutenue par une énergie capable d'aller au crime. Déjà mise au jour par Le Mythe de Sisyphe, l'absurdité de la condition humaine donne au Malentendu d'étranges résonances, moins proches des tragédies d'Eschyle, parfois, que du théâtre d'Ionesco.
