Le choc entre un drame personnel et une affaire d'Etat : Rodrigue choisit le code d'honneur de sa caste plutôt que son amour pour Chimène. C'est à ce prix-là que l'on devient un héros cornélien, et quel héros ! Généreux, vaillant, sensible, bon fils, bon sujet, bon soldat ! L'incarnation d'un certain idéal chevaleresque capable de tirer des larmes aux publics les plus endurcis. Le Cid est un chef-d'œuvre écrit en alexandrins : douze syllabes qui jouent une partition aussi subtile qu'émouvante.
L'accompagnement pédagogique définit les conventions théâtrales que sont le monologue, le quiproquo ou les stances, pour mieux saisir la maîtrise de l'art dramatique selon Corneille. Il propose aussi l'étude d'un texte argumentatif : la tirade de Chimène pour convaincre Rodrigue de ne pas se laisser tuer.
