The most extensive dictionary ever dedicated to translating Chinese in a Western language was first released in 2002 in the form of seven volumes, the outcome ot the gigantic work put by Jesuit sinologists and their followers.

« Le Grand Ricci » (6 volumes of 1216 pages each and an extra one for appendixes with 1377 pages, 21/27 format, put together by the Taipei and Paris Ricci Jesuit institutes, first as a joint publication by Desclée de Brouwer, 2001 and the Ricci institutes) not only stores encyclopedic data packing together 13 292 entries (by characters) previously released in the « Dictionnaire Ricci des caractères chinois » but also extends it further to 280 000 words and Chinese expressions linked up to 200 categories representing « every field of human knowledge » (sciences, advanced technologies, medicine, law, philosophy ).
