Kafka ne nous a laissé que des fragments ; ses romans le sont au même titre que ses aphorismes et ses journaux intimes. Mais ce qui frappe de prime abord, c'est que l'inachèvement n'exclut pas une subtilité et une minutie du détail peu communes.
Rien de plus poignant que cette intensité, sans cesse interrompue par l'insatisfaction, sans cesse reprise par l'espérance, voire la certitude d'une totalité à conquérir. « Celui qui, de son vivant, ne vient pas à bout de la vie - écrit-il en octobre 1921 dans son journal - il a besoin de l'une de ses mains pour écarter un peu le désespoir que lui cause son destin - il n'y arrive que très imparfaitement - et de l'autre main il peut enregistrer ce qu'il aperçoit sous les décombres, car il voit autre chose et plus que les autres. »
