La démocratie des autres

La notion de démocratie est si bien enracinée dans la culture européenne et nord-américaine, qu'elle est généralement considérée comme un concept purement occidental ; ainsi, la démocratie serait une valeur que l'Occident aurait pour mission de faire prévaloir et d'introduire dans des pays qui en auraient été jusque-là privés.
Mais des difficultés inattendues, d'ordre militaire et politique, rencontrées par la coalition menée par les États-Unis durant la deuxième après-guerre irakienne, ont soulevé une vague de scepticisme sur les possibilités de faire adopter dans le pays, dans des délais relativement courts, un gouvernement démocratique.
L'originalité de la pensée d'Amartya Sen, économiste et humaniste, est de démontrer la complexité du problème de la démocratie.
