Contrairement à ce qu'on a longtemps pensé, les
appartenances ethniques, culturelles et identitaires
en Afrique étaient extrêmement souples avant la
colonisation : on n'était pas Peul, Bambara ou
Malinké de toute éternité, mais on le devenait.
De nombreux changements d'identité ont ainsi
été observés dans tous les domaines. Des Peul
pouvaient devenir Bambara, puis Malinké, et
inversement ; des païens, devenir musulmans, puis
retourner au paganisme ; des sociétés villageoises,
devenir des royaumes, puis retomber dans
l'anarchie ; des sociétés produisant pour leurs
stricts besoins, s'ouvrir au marché, puis se replier
sur l'autarcie...
Ce livre pionnier, l'un des premiers à avoir utilisé
la notion de métissage en anthropologie, contredit
l'image d'une Afrique figée dans la tradition et
s'ouvrant difficilement à la modernité coloniale et
postcoloniale.
