Dans les années 1930, Hitler réarme et, aux Etats-Unis, les grands financiers décident d'entrer dans le jeu. La nécessité de renforcer l'acier profite à l'industrie norvégienne. Selmer Hoysand trouve enfin du travail. Il devient un fidèle militant de la social-démocratie comme son fils Arnold. Son neuveu Rasmus, lui, connaît un autre destin.
