Set apart from the village, Château de Carrouges (Orne region) stands as a solid granite, brick and slate dwelling, surrounded by water-filled moats.
Constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries, its diverse wings are organized around an interior court which harmonizes the design. Family portraits and furniture of the estate's owners confer a lived-in charm to this ensemble. The park retains some exceptional 17th-century wrought-ironwork. The edifice, originally built for defence and become over time a country château, displays a skilful blend of austerity and splendour.
