OM is a Ciheam series devoted to the development of Mediterranean agriculture. Having appeared in the form of a periodical from 1970 to 1976, the title OM has been given to the "Etudes" series from 1981 to 1989. To date, OM includes three series: Séminaires Méditerranéennes (Ser.A), Etudes et Recherches (Ser.B) and Cahier OM.
In 1999, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB) was delegated by Ciheam to set up and coordinate the Mediterranean Organic Agriculture Network (MOAN) whose long-standing mandate is to further the development of scientific and technical knowledge on organic agriculture in the Mediterranean area and to promote a Mediterranean model for the application of the method. Over the last years, MOAN () has launched study and research activities on organic agriculture in the Mediterranean basin. The major activities performed by MOAN may be synthesized as follows: data collection on organic farming in the Mediterranean region; description of the organic farming state-of-the-art in each Mediterranean country and identification of the stumbling blocks in production, processing and marketing; survey of the European and international mandatory regulations now in force (EEC Reg. 2092/91 and modifications) and identification of the existing critical points and the adjustments required prior to any application of the organic production method in the area; design of organic models in the Mediterranean basin; documentation centre about Mediterranean Organic Agriculture (MOA); database on the experts in MOA trained in the framework of IAMB courses; database on the institutions specialised in MOA.
This report, stemming from the collaborative work between IAMB and MOAN members, is a contribution to this wide process. It is designed to enhance the understanding of the dynamics leading to the development of organic agriculture in the Mediterranean basin. The Report provides both a general and country-based overview of organic agriculture, with regard to regulatory, technical, agronomic and market issues, institutions dealing with training, research and testing, activities carried out by boards and organisations through data and information collected individually by each member of MOAN.
