Les Nègres - Edition de Michel Corvin

Aux personnages de Genet on
pourrait dire : «Arrête de faire le
Nègre !», comme on dit à d'autres :
«Arrête de faire le clown !» En fait, ici, c'est
la même chose : Nègre et clown c'est tout un,
dans la dérision, le double jeu et la provocation.
Ces Nègres-là n'ont pas un nez rouge qui les
métamorphose mais un nez noir qui les dissimule
d'autant plus qu'il ne se voit pas. Ils jouent à
paraître ce qu'ils sont déjà et à être ce qu'ils ne
sont pas, dans une confusion plaisante mais bien
faite pour dérouter qui voudrait en finir une
bonne fois avec les faux-semblants. Il est toutefois
inutile d'attendre de Genet qu'il révèle tout à trac
sa position personnelle quant au statut politique
et social du Noir. Comme en se jouant, il laisse
affleurer ses angoisses et ses désirs, sa violence
et ses espoirs de revanche. Le rire des Nègres est
désarmant sans doute mais, désarmés, les Blancs -
présents sur le plateau à titre d'oppresseurs autant
qu'à titre de public - ne sauront plus se défendre :
c'est bien autour de la cérémonie funèbre de leur
anéantissement que la pièce est construite.
