About the author

Viktor P. Astakhov has more than 30 years experience in metal cutting, cutting tool design, and tool implementation practice, in various industries. He is a professor of Michigan State University and Tool Research and Application Manager of the General Motors Unit of PSMi.

In 1983, he received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Tula Polytechnic University, Tula-Moscow, Russia, and has since won a number of awards for both his teaching and his research, including the SME James M. Beabers Lifetime Achievement Award. His main research interests include the theory of metal cutting and its applications; cutting tool design, assessment and optimization; machinability of materials; and new tool materials and coatings.

Among the books he has authored are: Tribology of Metal Cutting (2006), Physics of Strength and Fracture Control (2004), and Mechanics of Metal Cutting (1999). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advances in Machining and Forming Operations.
