About the author

Stilianos E. Kountakis, MD, PhD, is Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology and Director of Rhinology/Sinus Surgery at Georgia Health Sciences University. He obtained his MD from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and later received his PhD from the University of Crete Medical School, Heraklion, Crete. Dr. Kountakis has served on the faculty at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he was the Director of Rhinology-Sinus Surgery. Dr. Kountakis has a number of research interests relating to different forms of sinusitis, on which he has published extensively. He serves on the editorial board or is a reviewer for several major journals in the field of otolaryngology. Dr. Kountakis has served on many committees of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and in 2002 received the Academy’s Service Honor Award. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Rhinologic Society. Among his many other professional activities, Dr. Kountakis is a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Rhinologic Society.
