Opened in 1846, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe belongs to the ancient nobility of German museums. Designed by Heinrich Hübsch, the building - with a fresco by Moritz von Schwind in the stairwell and halls decorated according to his plans - is one of the last remaining examples of a total artwork of its time. The stunning collection includes the art of eight centuries, especially works by German, French, and Dutch masters. Eight hundred paintings and sculptures are on permanent exhibition in the main building and in the Orangery. The Kupferstichkabinett - the Collection of Prints and Drawings - is one of Europe's oldest continually growing collections of graphics. In addition, the Orangery is home to one of the oldest children's and youth museums in Germany, in which changing exhibitions introduce young visitors to the art of all epochs.
