Avec Les Brigands, histoire d'un conflit entre un père et ses fils, le jeune Schiller - il a vingt ans - avait conquis d'un coup son public. Quelques années plus tard, en 1787, avec Don Carlos, il reprend le motif, mais le cadre a changé: un drame aux dimensions shakespeariennes évoque l'Espagne de Philippe II, l'Inquisition domine, le sinistre duc d'Albe est chargé d'écraser la rébellion des Pays-Bas. Le fils du roi se révolte lui aussi, d'autant plus que son père lui a soufflé Élisabeth, sa fiancée. Le célèbre opéra de Verdi composé pour l'Opéra de Paris en 1867, reprend tous les aspects de ce drame complexe. Mais en garde-t-il l'extraordinaire brutalité?
