The terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001 shook the world and ushered in a new era of terrorism. The media rose to the occasion by dealing with the attacks and its aftermath extensively; in fact, few events have gotten that much media attention. Based on a twofold approach, incorporating semiotics and cultural memory studies, this study compares three of the biggest US newsmagazines, Newsweek, TIME and The NewYorker as for their 9/11-related output and the commemorative issues and articles that appeared in the years following the attacks. Furthermore, the study seeks to investigate on the question whether newsmagazines really form or merely store 9/11-related memory and how this is achieved by the newsmagazine/article layout.
