What do three widely separated and seemingly unrelated individuals-Marc Levaseur, a young poet in Paris; Emily Cosgrove, a Ph.D. student in archaeology working in Pompeii; and Demyan Yegorov, a Russian scholar-have in common? They each have a portion of an ancient inscription from the Necronomicon of the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred. Can the fourth and final segment of the inscription be found? The three explorers hope to find it in an obscure region of the Arabian desert-nothing less than Irem, the City of Pillars. Alan Dean Foster, whose prodigious work in the realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror has made him a legend in his own time, has written a compelling and action-packed short novel that draws upon some of the most intriguing ideas in the tales of H. P. Lovecraft and brought them into our own time-but he has retained the atmosphere of ancient evil that makes Lovecraft's work so distinctive.
Alan Dean Foster (b. 1946) is the author of dozens of novels, including novelizations of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Alien, along with eight story collections and other works. He is also a composer of classical music.

Alan Dean Foster was born in New York City in 1946, and raised in Los Angeles. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Master of Fine Arts in Cinema from UCLA (1968, 1969) he spent two years as a copywriter for a small advertising and public relations firm in Studio City, California.His published works include more than 100 books, including hard science-fiction, fantasy, horror, detective, western, historical, and contemporary fiction, as well as numerous nonfiction articles on film, science, and scuba diving. He has also produced the novel versions of many films, including such well-known productions as Star Wars, the first three Alien films, Alien Nation, The Chronicles of Riddick, Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation, and both Transformers films. Other works include scripts for talking records, radio, computer games, and the story for the first Star Trek movie. He resides in Prescott, Arizona, in a house built of brick salvaged from a turn-of-the-century miners' brothel. He cohabitates with assorted dogs, cats, fish, several hundred houseplants, visiting local wildlife, and the ensorcelled chair of the nefarious Dr. John Dee.
