After getting caught, a young thief is charged to serve one year in a working prison. The lad is lonely and without hope but when he is allowed to help muck out the local stables Mr Alfie sees that he has a way with the animals. So the stable manager asks the lad to tame a damaged and violent horse called Dombey, giving both the boy and horse a second chance.
