Meningococcal meningitis is a disease which remains endemic throughout the year interspersed with epidemics now and then. Though the disease organism, Neisseria meningitides, has been extensively studied and the mechanisms of carriage and spread are well known, no definite means of controlling the occurrence of infection have been found. This is even more surprising in view of the fact that no antibiotic resistance has been demonstrated in this country so far. There is no reservoir other than man, the vast majority of which comprises of asymptomatic carriers. Paradoxically, no relationship between carrier rates and occurrence of epidemics has been observed, even more surprisingly, only an insignificant minority of patients have ever had prior contact with another case. This book was undertaken to review the factors involved in meningococcal carriage in the context of the Armed Forces setup. In addition, serotypes and antibiotic sensitivity were studied.
