Marc Aurel, geboren 121 n. Chr. in Rom. Ab 161 n. Chr. war er Kaiser des Römischen Reiches, das er in unaufhörlichen Kriegen vor dem Zusammenbruch bewahren mußte. Seine Selbstbetrachtungen sind deutlich von der Philosophie der Stoa beeinflußt. Er starb 180 n. Chr. im Feldlager in Vindobona bei Wien.
