LAPD Detective Van Eng is assigned to the Cold Case Homicide Special Section. Due to her impaired hearing, her remaining senses are heightened by acute vision, a nearly photographic memory, and an enhanced sense of smell. A murder on a famed Hollywood backlot cuts short production of film about nanobots. Van and her LAPD colleagues are tasked with investigating the murder, which leads them back to the Silicon Valley and Van's former suitor, Dr. Brian Johannsen, a scientist whose is experimenting with nanobots enhanced by artificial intelligence.
