Erhard Scheibe is one of the most outstanding German philosophers of science. He has written extensively on all the problems that confront the philosophy of mathematics and physics: rationalism versus empiricism, the laws of nature, and reductionism. He has published books on the logical foundations of quantum mechanics and on the reduction of physical theories. Little of his work has been translated into English. This collection of 38 essays is intended to remedy this omission and to help to make Erhard Scheibe's philosophical ideas better known to an international audience.

Ernst Scheibe, Jahrgang 1931, studierte Theologie und Germanistik in Berlin und Leipzig. Das Vikariat absolvierte er 1955 in Treuen (Vogtland). Nach seiner ersten Pfarrstelle 1956-1965 in Wildenhain lernte er von 1967-1971 Verlagsbuchhändler beim Reclam-Verlag und übernahm dort die Planungsleitung, 1971 kehrte er nach Leisnig in den Pfarrdienst zurück. Von 1976-1985 begleitete er das Pfarramt in Böhlen. In den Jahren 1985-1987 war er Studiendirektor am Seminar für kirchlichen Dienst in Bad Lausick und anschließend Pfarramtsleiter in Borna. Seit 1996 ist er im Ruhestand und lebt in Mühltroff/Vogtland.
Brigitte Falkenburg studierte Physik an der Universität Erlangen, der Technischen Universität Berlin und der Universität Heidelberg, und Philosophie an den Universitäten Bielefeld und Heidelberg. Sie promovierte 1985 zum Dr. phil mit einer Arbeit aus der Naturphilosophie und 1986 zum Dr.rer.nat. auf dem Gebiet der Hochenergiephysik. Seit 1997 ist sie Professorin für Philosophie der Wissenschaft und Technik an der Technischen Universität Dortmund. Sie ist Mitglied in der Académie Internationale de la Philosophie des Sciences , Brüssel, und der European Academy of Science . Zudem ist sie Sprecherin des Arbeitskreises Philosophie der Physik der DPG. Für ihre Arbeit zur Philosophie der Wissenschaft wurde sie mehrfach mit Preisen ausgezeichnet und hat zahlreiche Bücher und Schriften zur Philosophie der Physik, Natur- und Technikphilosophie veröffentlicht.
