In den beiden Dekaden vor 1914 führten Großbritannien und Deutschland zahlreiche Kolonialkriege. Während diese für die Bevölkerung vor Ort verheerende Folgen hatten, waren die meisten Menschen in Europa damit nur bei der Zeitungslektüre konfrontiert. Als Medienthema aber waren Kolonialkriege und imperialistische Interventionen in der öffentlichkeit sehr präsent, sie lösten politische Kontroversen aus und prägten die Wahrnehmung der europäischen Expansion. Anhand der englischen und deutschen Presse untersucht diese Studie, wie die telegraphische Vernetzung der Welt und der Aufstieg der Massenmedien die Berichterstattung über imperiale Militäreinsätze beeinflussten, welche Selbst- und Fremdbilder dabei zum Vorschein kamen und welchen Einfluss die öffentlichen Debatten über die imperiale Expansion auf die politische Entwicklung Großbritanniens und Deutschlands hatten. Both Germany and Great Britain fought numerous colonial wars during the two decades prior to the First World War. These conflicts and wars had disastrous conflicts for colonial subjects. Europeans only learnt about these far and away wars from the comforts of their living room digesting newspapers. As a topic in German and British media, the wars very highly prominent. And they were controversial. Colonial war and violence triggered political confrontations at home. The media coverage shaped the perception of European expansion and colonial rule. Based on a wide-cast media analysis this book traces and analyses the controversial media coverage about colonial warfare in the age of information and telegraphy around 1900. Mass media shaped and influenced the conduct of warfare in the colonies as well as self-perceptions and perceptions of the distant colonial territories and its people.
