« L'essai sur La personne et le sacré, qu'a écrit Simone Weil à Londres dans la dernière année de sa vie, ne cesse de nous interpeller pour au moins deux raisons. La première est la critique sans réserve du concept de personne, qui, à plus d'un demi-siècle de distance, n'a rien perdu de son actualité. La seconde - sans doute tout aussi actuelle - est la recherche acharnée et passionnée d'un principe qui se place au-delà des institutions, du droit et des libertés démocratiques, et sans lequel celles-ci perdent tout sens et toute utilité. Ces deux raisons - qu'illustrent en quelque sorte les deux termes du titre de l'essai - s'y trouvent aussi étroitement liées que la trame et la chaîne d'un tissu et, si nous tentons ici de les distinguer, le lecteur ne devra pas oublier que, dans la pensée profonde de Simone Weil, elles sont, en réalité, inséparables. »
