Stephan Kirste ist ordentlicher Universitätsprofessor für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Salzburg und Vorsitzender der Deutschen Sektion der Internationalen Vereinigung für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie. Zuvor war er Dekan der Deutschsprachigen Fakultät für Vergleichende Staats- und Rechtswissenschaften an der Deutschsprachigen Andrássy Gyula Universität Budapest. Er hat sich 2004 in Heidelberg habilitiert und erhielt die venia legendi für Öffentliches Recht, Rechtsphilosophie, Verfassungsgeschichte der Neuzeit und Rechtssoziologie. Promoviert wurde er von der Juristischen Fakultät der Universität Freiburg. Er war 2006 Gastprofessor an der University of Virginia und ist seit 2001 Gastprofessor an verschiedenen Brasilianischen Universitäten.
