Comme il vous plaira - ou comment faire
tenir en une comédie une usurpation
près de tourner au tragique ; une pastorale
austère où souffle le vent d'hiver ;
une pastorale plus amène mais où la
cour d'amour se fait d'homme à homme,
quand celle à qui elle s'adresse est travestie en Ganymède ;
lequel crée la discorde dans un couple de pastoureaux dont
la femme s'éprend d'une femme, faute de savoir qui se
cache sous les habits du mystifiant berger ; et pour finir, un
dénouement en forme de devinette : chacun aura-t-il sa chacune,
sur fond de retour à l'ordre politique ? Il faut toute la
désinvolte insolence de Shakespeare envers les héritages
littéraires pour que la forêt des Ardennes chère à Pétrarque
devienne une Forêt d'Ardenne ou d'Arden à l'anglaise : un
duc exilé y vit en Robin des bois tandis que des amants
souffrent de la blessure délicieuse sous des déguisements
incongrus ; non sans que le genre compassé de la pastorale
ne soit bouleversé par la rencontre d'un bouffon rustique et
d'un philosophe mélancolique venu nous rassurer : la vie est
un théâtre, où tous les hommes ne sont que des acteurs...
