Un quatuor, comme un concert des âmes. Drame du cruel amour, drame du jeune homme en proie à des aspirations contradictoires, drame du conflit entre la fidélité et la liberté, entre la religion et la passion, L'Échange est le miroir d'une « âme qui joue aux quatre coins avec elle-même ».
