Professor Sir Ernst H. Gombrich, O.M., C.B.E., F.B.A., verstorben im November 2001, zählt zu den größten und einflussreichsten Kunsthistorikern überhaupt. 1909 in Wien geboren, schloss er sich 1936 dem Warburg-Institut in London an, dessen Leiter er wurde. Von 1959 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1976 war er Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der University of London. 1988 wurde er zum Mitglied des Order of Merit ernannt. Gombrich erhielt weltweit zahlreiche Preise.
