About the author

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, geb. 1900 in Lyon, verlor früh den Vater und wurde von der Mutter auf dem Schloss de La Mole erzogen. Er war Schüler in einem Jesuitenkolleg, später Architekturstudent in Paris, Soldat bei der Luftwaffe, Handelsvertreter. In den zwanziger Jahren wurde er Flieger und flog die Strecke Toulouse-Casablanca-Dakar. Im September 1939 wurde Saint-Exupéry Pilot in einer Aufklärer-Staffel, im Dezember 1940 ging er nach Amerika, 1943 kam er an die Front in Nordafrika. Am 31.7.1944 startete er vom Flughafen Borgo auf Korsika zu seinem letzten Aufklärungsflug. Er ist nie zurückgekehrt. Das Wrack seiner Maschine wurde im Jahr 2000 auf dem Grund des Mittelmeers bei Marseille geortet und 2004 gehoben und identifiziert
